Kindness in the Making

In the fall of 2020, the SECU MD Foundation had an idea. As the world continued to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, which left people feeling disconnected, lonely, and anxious, the foundation decided to spread kindness through a month-long Kindness Campaign.

It was simple really. SECU employees set out to brighten someone’s day by doing things like baking cookies for their neighbors, leaving kind messages in chalk on sidewalks, volunteering at their favorite non-profit organization, and paying for someone’s coffee. Through one kind act, we could create a kindness ripple effect as people paid kindness forward.

What started as a way to uplift people in our communities during the pandemic has turned into a movement that is connecting people across our state – and country – through kindness. In the first three years of our Kindness Campaign, we:

Recorded more than 280,000 acts of kindness on our Kindness Tracker
Performed over 5,000 volunteer hours in our communities
Made $52,000 in in-kind donations
Awarded $100,000 in kindness grants to Special Olympics of Maryland and Kennedy Krieger Institute
Raised $10,000 for the SECU MD Foundation

Now in its fourth year, we set an ambitious goal to perform 500,000 acts of kindness during our 2023 Kindness Campaign, which will run during the month of October.

SECU is humbled to have worked with numerous partners resulting in more than tens-of-thousands of acts of kindness contributed by over ~4,500 individuals.
